Wolf Creek Nuclear Generating Station Celebrates 40 Years of Nuclear Energy, Providing Reliable Power

Burlington, KS – March 11, 2025 – Today, Wolf Creek Nuclear Generating Station celebrates 40 years of providing reliable energy to Kansas and the region.

The plant, which received its original operating license on March 11, 1985, will continue operations for at least two more decades. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has extended Wolf Creek’s operating license through 2045.

“Wolf Creek is an important piece of our diverse energy mix that helps us serve all of our 1.7 million customers across Kansas and Missouri,” said David Campbell, Evergy chairman and chief executive officer. “When we talk about reliability, affordability, and sustainability for Evergy as a company, Wolf Creek delivers on all of those. It is an integral part of the communities we serve.”

The Honorable Governor Laura Kelly joined Campbell and other officials for a special event honoring Wolf Creek’s 40 years and its impact on the state of Kansas.

“Beyond energy production, Wolf Creek plays a major role in Kansas’ economic strength,” said Kelly. “Its workforce keeps the plant running efficiently while strengthening the state’s broad energy sector. Energy reliability isn’t just about keeping the lights on. It’s about creating the kind of economic stability that allows businesses and families to thrive.”

Wolf Creek is Kansas’s only operational nuclear plant. Since becoming fully operational in 1985, it has had a significant impact on the state’s energy supply as well as a strong economic impact on Coffey County and nearby communities.

  • Wolf Creek generates approximately 1,250 megawatts of electricity – enough to power more than 800,000 homes.

  • Over its lifetime, Wolf Creek has produced more than 345 million megawatt hours of electricity.

  • As of January 2025, Wolf Creek surpassed 10 million safe work hours without a lost-time incident.

  • Wolf Creek is 94% owned by Evergy and 6% owned by Kansas Electric Power Cooperative, Inc. (KEPCo).

  • Wolf Creek employs 750 full-time employees.
